A shot from antiquity. A disquieting feeling that your best days as a photographer were your last days as an amateur....
How simple were the tools? A Yashica Mat 124G. A small flash in an umbrella. A piece of string to measure the flash to subject distance. Pretested. Panatomic X film. ASA 32.

Yes, they were becaused we cared. We in it for the photography not the money. I miss those days, 40 years later I think my work was better back then because I didn't compromise, I didn't care about money I cared about the image, the meaning, the image to tell the story. 40 years on now I'm trying to go back, what a bitch. I have the resouces now, but ?, I truly miss those days, they were shining times.
In my opinion, one had to try harder with film. Translated: You didn't get as many chances so you put more thought into composition. Which is why I love shooting film. I have a ball with my mint 124G.
That's a beautiful photo, and not the least because of the technical quality itself. I remember well the thin negatives I'd get with Panatomic X (compared with Tri-X, I mean...different beasts of course).
Kirk, I've hesitated to ask this for a long time, but which books can I read to teach me how to use a Yashica (or Pentax 6x7) with a flash as described? Would any of yours help? I need nuts and bolts help (i.e. which cables to use, suggestions on lights to buy) as well as stuff regarding exposure. Any assistance rendered would be great.
