I know that many of you think it's just wrong for me to be using this lens instead of the new 12-40mm f2.8 lens. I acknowledge your beliefs. But in reality I love the lens because I don't have to care about it. It has its own aura of insouciance and I find it delightful. I also think it's a darn good lens. No ad. Just opinion.

It's funny how bad these kit lenses are supposed to be. The 10-30mm kit lens on my Nikon V1 has a similar reputation. Yet I somehow manage to get sharp photos with nice colors and tones, just as you are getting from your 12-50. I wonder if any of the naysayers about these kit lenses have ever actually used them. And if so, did they use them properly?

I'm sorry Kirk, but f/6.3 at the long end of that 12-50mm is just plain silly. Unless, of course it's f/6.4 at the long end of the Leica X Vario. Then it's a smart move. (smile)
The 12-50 is a very fine kit lens. I, too, enjoy shooting it on my EM5. But my favorite kit lens of all time is the 18-55 that I got with my Fuji XE1. I know, apples and oranges, but perhaps what's happening is that kit lenses in general are getting better.
I don't about you Kirk, but I get a perverse sense of pleasure in using supposedly substandard equipment to produce work. I shot quite a few projects including my last book using the 12-50 and I find it works really well.
The 12-60mm Olympus F2.8- F4 has to be my favourite kit lens.
Came with my Oly E3 many years ago.
Actually, come to think of it, it may be my favourite lens, period.
I find it fun, not only using those cheap kit lenses, but also to bring out my vintage digicams and shoot personal photos. Those cameras of yesteryear, like my Olympus E-10 or Powershot G2 have their own personalities and quirks and can shoot some amazing photos.
I totally agree with using equipment that has a bad reputation, amongst the finest available.
Heck, I even shoot the lens that has the reputation as Nikon's worst lens ever, one that supposedly gave all zoom lenses a bad name early on - the 43-86mm f3.5 pre-AI.

That last picture with the runner makes me think of what they are hoping to do in downtown Birmingham, AL ...loft apts for the young and upwardly mobile just out from the business district. Probably doing better in Austin as a concept/project.

Austin's downtown is aiming to have 5,000+ downtown apartments/condos in the near future. That's in a space of about one square mile. They are filling up nicely as home ownership in the better neighborhoods is heading into astronomic territory. If you didn't buy 15 years ago chances are you won't be living in one of the "close in" and "tony" areas unless you've hit it big with your company's IPO....
